CHALLENGE
President, Environmental Services
Private Equity-Backed National Technical Services Company · Environmental Services Group · Search Completed
A leading private equity-backed technical services company set out to recruit the President of its Environmental Services business, one of the largest operating groups in the organization, and engaged TRANSEARCH as its search partner.
The company had grown into a substantial national platform through both organic expansion and acquisition. Its environmental business served a diversified base of public and private-sector clients and employed professionals across a broad geographic footprint.
The opportunity was significant, and so was the leadership challenge.
The next President would lead a large, complex P&L while accelerating organic growth, strengthening client relationships, integrating acquired businesses, developing talent, and building greater consistency across a geographically dispersed organization. The mandate included improving both near-term performance and the long-term strategic value of the business.
Just as importantly, the company wanted a leader who could create followership. The business had experienced considerable change over time. Its next President needed to provide stability and direction while establishing a more integrated, growth-oriented culture, without losing the entrepreneurial qualities and technical expertise that had made the individual businesses successful.
ACTION
Defining What Success Would Require
The CEO and ownership representatives worked closely with TRANSEARCH to define what success would require beyond industry experience. They set a high bar: one executive who could serve as business builder, operator, client leader, and people leader.
Together, they determined the successful executive needed to demonstrate:
- Leadership of a substantial environmental or technical-services P&L
- A record of delivering profitable organic growth
- Strong commercial instincts and credibility with sophisticated clients
- Experience developing and retaining senior leadership talent
- The ability to integrate acquired businesses while creating a common operating culture
- Comfort operating in a fast-paced, private equity-backed environment
- The resilience and judgment to lead through organizational change and ambiguity
These requirements became a leadership scorecard and a defined set of behavioral competencies: Passion for Results, Entrepreneurial Mindset, Drive Strategy Into the Business, Comfort with Ambiguity, Delivers Change, Hire and Retain Top Talent, A Leader Who Inspires, and Resilient.
Looking Beyond the Obvious Candidates
Leadership chose not to limit the search to executives holding the same title. TRANSEARCH mapped the broader environmental consulting and services market to identify leaders who had already operated at comparable scale or had demonstrated the capacity to step into a larger enterprise leadership role.
The research spanned national and regional environmental consulting, engineering, remediation, testing, and technical-services organizations. The strategy deliberately targeted a broad cross-section of the environmental market instead of relying on a narrow group of obvious competitors.
Candidates were assessed against both their record of accomplishment and the environment in which those results had been achieved, with particular attention to measurable evidence of:
- Growth. Had they actually grown a business, and could they explain where that growth came from?
- Leadership. Could they build a team and create followership across a large, decentralized organization?
- Commercial capability. Were they personally credible with clients and capable of creating a stronger sales culture?
- Operational discipline. Could they translate strategy into execution across multiple businesses, markets, and geographies?
- M&A integration. Had they successfully brought organizations and leadership teams together following acquisitions?
- Culture. Could they lead change without unnecessarily disrupting the capabilities and relationships that already created value?
The Distinction That Mattered
This lens changed the field. Several executives could satisfy the technical and financial requirements of the position. Far fewer demonstrated the complete combination of commercial leadership, operational scale, cultural leadership, and executive presence the mandate required. The scorecard gave the CEO and ownership a clear, shared way to see that difference.
IMPACT
Following a confidential national search and a rigorous assessment process, the company selected an accomplished environmental industry executive with extensive experience leading complex businesses, developing client relationships, and building high-performing teams.
The executive joined the organization in April 2025 as President of the Environmental Services business.
More than a year after the appointment, the President continues to perform successfully, leading the business and advancing the objectives the CEO and ownership established at the beginning of the search. The company gained a leader capable of running the existing business and of helping lead its next stage of development.
WHY THE SEARCH WORKED
The company began by defining the business outcomes its new President needed to deliver, instead of the résumé the person should possess. That clarity allowed the search team to evaluate candidates against the realities of the assignment: growth, P&L leadership, client development, integration, talent, culture, and change.
The placement illustrates an important distinction in senior executive search. Matching experience is only the starting point. For a President-level appointment in a private equity-backed organization, the more consequential question is whether the executive can translate experience into results in the specific environment they are being hired to lead.
For organizations undergoing growth, transformation, or ownership transition, leadership selection becomes one of the most consequential investments they make. The goal is to identify the leader whose experience, capabilities, and leadership style fit what the business needs next.
