Organizations that understand those fundamentals, and build around them, win the talent race in good markets and bad.
Start with the finding that matters most: leadership drives retention. Surveys consistently show that well over 90% of employees credit leadership with whether they stay, and Gallup research finds that engaged employees are 59% less likely to look for a job with another organization in the coming year.
Retention is not primarily about ping-pong tables or even pay. It is about whether people are led well.
That is also the discipline behind our own track record, where 90% of the leaders we place are still in the role two years later.
It is tempting to treat hiring and keeping people as separate functions, but they run on the same drivers. The things that attract a strong candidate, credible leadership, a real culture, flexibility, fair compensation, and a path to grow, are the same things that keep them once they arrive.
When acquisition and retention are managed as one system, every hire strengthens the culture that makes the next hire easier. When they are managed separately, organizations pour money into recruiting people they then fail to keep.
A few levers consistently decide the outcome.
Leadership sets the ceiling. People join for the opportunity and stay, or leave, largely because of the people they report to.
Investing in how your leaders lead is the highest-return talent strategy available.
Culture is the daily experience. Recognition, fairness, and a sense of belonging are what people feel every day, and they compound into loyalty or attrition over time.
Flexibility has become an expectation. The ability to work in ways that fit a full life is now one of the first things candidates weigh, and one of the fastest ways to lose people is to take it away.
Career development keeps ambitious people. A visible path to grow tells your best people their future is here.
Without it, they assume it is elsewhere.
Compensation has to be fair. Pay will not retain a disengaged employee, but unfair pay will lose an engaged one.
It is the floor, not the strategy.
The organizations that struggle treat talent as a periodic scramble, ramping up recruiting when turnover spikes and forgetting it when things stabilize. The ones that thrive treat acquisition and retention as an ongoing leadership discipline, measured, revisited, and owned at the top.
Do that, and you spend less time replacing people and more time building on them.
If you want to go deeper on the retention half of this equation, our employee retention guide and proven strategies to retain top talent get specific, and building a culture that attracts the best people covers the acquisition side.
Leadership. Surveys consistently find that the overwhelming majority of employees credit leadership with whether they stay, and that engaged employees are far less likely to look for another job. Culture, flexibility, and development matter, but they largely flow from how people are led.
Lead with the things candidates actually weigh: strong leadership, a genuine culture, real flexibility, competitive compensation, and a visible path to grow. In a tight market, employer brand and how you treat people become part of the offer.
